Unforgotten Realms the cartoon is weird because of the Escapist
ignoring that
every other thing Rob has made or produced has no formal copyright
videos, assets, characters, etc.
if they did, he could at any time opt to nullify that ownership and release it into the public domain
but he doesn't, so nothing legally will change
that first statement is factually incorrect, as a simplification of copyright protection standards
YouTube has a very murky implementation of something similar, their Terms of Service is the first layer and has the same lack of legal authority as other ToS's
They do allow for the uploading of actual copywritten works, and they can extend those protections to their platform
On the topic of Rob saying he'll putting assets into the public domain: Is there anything he actually couldn't distribute? I don't think he could distribute the Unforgotten Realms theme, as it's a royalty-free commission from Nathan Allan Pinard, who does have a copyright on it, but besides that, I don't know.

It's income for someone that needs it. If people are willing to pay, and her options are do that until she finds something that is more sustainable that she can do, or be homeless & starving, I think most people are going to pick the former.
