also they can mutate to be more severe, its just natural selection leads to the less severe, more transmissible ones to become dominant

you can have unbenificial adaptations take over
as long as they are not too much of a hinderance
since, you know, natural selection is not a conscious choice and all
random chance can lead to less transmissible, more deadly strains becoming dominant
for a period of time
or hell, extremely deadly but delayed, super transmisible could become dominant, then die off after it kills all of humanity
