normal chess is topologically 2D because you never need to move anywhere other than in 2D

There is a logical way to make 3D chess imo. All pieces move the same ways, player 1 starts on the bottom edge of a cube, player 2 starts at the opposite edge on the top. Pawns move up and towards the opposite side only (down if the top player)
