Left had a firm hold on being worse for years, but then they fell out of favour so the right had a chance to have the crazy fringe people start coming out again since they are not on the backfood of the culture war anymore
the correct centrism is caring more about things that actually matter as opposed to things that people tell you just to make you angry so that you care enough to do something that they want you to do

It has been shown that the ability to do stuff like that needs to be enforced and learned
which is what school is supposed to do (among other things)
