I think the issue is, both political sides see this reality where they own the entire country
even conservatives with California, see it as an "occupied red state at heart"
and Liberals see the entire country as being "held hostage by all the red counties and an uneducated populace", even sttes that vote 80% republican like WV
what would actually happen, if allowed to
is states would adjust their borders internally
since all of our states are fairly decentralized, a lot of border counties or subsections of states want to reorganize themselves
once we get off the nice round number of 50, I genuinely do think the subdivision movements will gather more support
you can solve it multiple ways, but I don't think any of the it floated until we get a few more states added

I think if you asked a lot of Americans if their entire net worth would just magically go up 40%, but your state is no longer apart of the US, you'd get a decent chunk of young people, who are the most likely to care about a bunch of free money, who also would vote for it

that's interesting, backs up the overall sentiment I observe (even though I trust polls fuck all)
my 40% number was just from open census/college data + some Spooky math trying to deduplicate it
so this tracks with that as well
it's the same reason young people in Europe want to stay in the Eurozone/Schengen
even though opinions on the EU overall are mixed
There's just no reason why you'd want to arbitrarily restrict yourself to Canada when the amount of choice and opportunity open up so drastically when you have access to America as well. Even if you like where you were raised in the provinces or end up sticking it out in Vancouver/Halifax/Toronto or wherever
It makes minimal sense to have borders between the US/Canada, but when you drill into what a realistic balance between the states and provinces would be, it really only makes sense in the context of integration/annexation, because you can't decouple the two really
Quebec is the odd one, because they can't be decoupled yet are culturally non-homogenous with the rest of N.America
but, given the choice between straight independence and a Texas like arrangement, I think the later is probably more stable long-term, even if the Greater US isn't going to continue to placate them with French language concessions that Canada is currently subject to
