I'm genuinely curious how this peace negotiation between the US and Russia goes, I feel like Trump's telegraphed what he wants which is $500b from Ukraine to stop the war

and he's going to give Russia some really interesting economic opportunities, that favor them in the short-term and the US in the long term

but I feel like the territory is going to be a weird divide

you can't have it be status quo qua, but you also probably can't give Russia the full Novorossiya corridor + Kharkov

the actual solution is to have Poland+Hunagary+Romania etc. step in to administer the portions of Ukraine, that's the only way you can expand Nato and give Russia what they want a Ukrainian rump state is a loss for everyone, and probably just leads to another conflict in 5-10 years

there is no solution that makes Ukraine happy, but I think that's obvious at this point

they're losing territory, money, and sovereignty either way

ig the only possible concession is Trump offering to "rebuild" their country after he's done rebuilding Gaza

but if anyone takes him up on that deal they may be the stupidest person alive

Russia agreeing to any economic plan post-war, likely is a loss for China (and Russia long-term), and honestly might be the biggest wildcard

Trump wants the peace by Easter (April 20) so it gives Russia ~2 months to make as many gains as they can on the ground before then

there's not going to be a ceasefire in the interim, so the question of motivation on either side will be suspect

you can spin it either way, Ukraine knows the end is in sight and they only have to hold out a little bit longer, or that they know none of this matters and just have to avoid dying for 60 days

end of WWI was much the same, telegraphed far ahead of time, and the number of assaults being made by either side dropped to near zero up until the final day, when everyone fired off all their ammo/shells so they wouldn't have to carry it all back with them
