the ex president of the waterloo student association posted this, then killed herself 2 weeks later
that is the current UW drama
What an absurd thing to kill yourself over
that's hillarious
my college has a little bit of that, every minor decision that the administration makes the SA sends out an email blast saying we need to RESIST, student walk-out, write your congressmen, protest at the library, etc.
same energy as obsessive union reps
Our student association, like all student associations, is just bloat. Current president gets I think 73k a year, he is some firstyear who from what I have read is useless
the only thing I can think of the student association doing of any note in the last 5-10 years is they shut down the on campus pub which pissed everyone off
and they took a "training" excersion to some nice ski hill and stayed at a pricy hotel
HOA at least flexes their power on the people unfortunate enough to live there
legitimately, WUSA does nothing
Whats really funny is the grad students at my university are trying to unionize since we are technically employees
and they keep giving me forms to fill out to support them (they need 60% of grads to sign to be allowed to bring the formation of the union to a vote)
and I just don't
because I think my TA pay is pretty decent for how much work I have to do as is, and that is essentially their main complain that we are not payed enough
their other complaints are jokes
education unions are always some of the worst
Spooky, idk if this makes my school based, but the turnout every year when they try to get signatures, is like 20% of the grad students sign
or something like that
so it is never happening

I think they have tried every year for the last 9 or so years
it's funnier that they keep trying
and every 2-4 years they lose any progress they made because the people pushing for it graduate
idk how you could be motivated enough about something so gay
to spend literal years on it
Without the union, UW gave me a 4k raise in my funding for no reason this year
so I don't even see their argument
I guess it probably protects TAs who have no spine and get railroaded into being overworked (commeserate to their pay)
which is about the only thing a lot of unions do
I suppose, but emailing the union to deal with that seems just as easy as emailing the university employed person whos job it is to deal with that for your department
and I think the union would have a harder time fixing it
that's what I mean by people with no spine
where they need someone to "negotiate" for them
even if it's just writing an email
"dear professor, Sarah is overworked, we're going to flex our union powers to make sure you cut her workload by 50%"
