its heavily useful
Only control theory that is not super ML heavy is straight theory stuff
Fundementally ML is just calculus of variations taken to the programing level, and calculus of variations is arguably one of the more important subfields of math imo

Its more so the machinary of calculus of variations leads to the kinds of things you are doing in machine learning. I am not an expert either since I did not do any ML during my masters
