i honestly have no problem with them going public. but i know online everyone acting like this is end of the world for discord. and i have no problem with this platform dieing

we can finally get something better

they dont lose control. control shifts to new stakeholders, shareholders, and the old stakeholders still position themselves with as much power as they still want

executive positions, majority shares, etc

the people losing the power are the users. as now the shareholders hold power we once had

leverage

as a services, obviously users make the money

but its about making decisions that will make the shareholders think the users will give more money

idk, someone else can probably better explain it

this is why you lose control. you have to pander to a bunch of shareholders who dont care about your company beyond profit. usually short term profit.

it makes companies become worse and worse over time

how is that goal all that different from the goals of the old stakeholders. they align, make money from users, they can cooperate and all win is the idea

and yes very good point. shareholders are more layers removed than old stakeholders. they will care more about short term

a private company can do things that arent even profit driven, like adding features or restrictions, making decisions, that stand to gain no profit at all

but legally a public company cant do that

steam is great example, and they are constantly being pressured into going public but wont. but they have monopoly power, thats why it works

afaik discord is very popular, and has a strong brand

they might not have a monopoly, but thats not really required to make a steady income

the only thing you really get out of going public is an injection of cash, but if you are able to make a steady profit, the "advantages" of going public just seem pointless to me

if i had a business that made a steady income, even if it wasnt huge, i would never make the decision to give up any amount of that control to outside parties who dont care about the product
