those drives are 100% fine to use
but when doing a bunch
one's bound to fail
and then the process to get it replaced takes way too much time
to be worth the hastle
compared to enterprise drives
where they just ship you more on the honour system
not for a while
I've been testing out NAS's mostly
to determine which company is the least shit
I'm not actually plotting Regi
don't worry
anyway Synology = FreeNAS > OMV > Buffalo > Unraid > those free ones they pack into any external enclosure > Windows storage spaces >>>>>>>>>>>> QNAP
It's been fun trying them all
it's fine
I think if I used it longer I'd probably run into more limitations
QNAP is the only one I think is unfit to be used
it's actually abominable
It's like if Phijkchu tried to build a software ecosystem
I think Unraid is fine for what it is, I mostly got frustrated when I was trying to migrate jails/containers to it, since it touts itself so much in that regard
and trying to do non-standard installs seemed to fuck with it
it wants to be booted off of a USB
which is also terrible
I will NEVER boot an OS off a USB
because in a server cabinet (which will normally be hot) they degrade after ~5 years
and I don't want to rely on my backup being the correct version to not lose everything
USB is only for boot, so it'll run normally and everything
and then suddenly *poof* nothing boots
better hope you weren't in the process of updating anything
which is why I restart a NAS 99% of the time
I think setting up Unraid was the best experience
of everything other than Synology
Synology is the Apple of NAS's, they're overpriced as fuck and I hate that I like them
when I eventually do upgrade my setup for real, I'll probably buy an enterprise synology rack
I enjoyed roling my own on FreeNas, but now that I've migrated all of my self-host stuff to Proxmox
I don't really use FreeNas for much other than data storage
I don't think it's worth the price honestly
they're so damn much
which is why I wanted QNAP to be good
