I don't know that you can make it display two different things in that case
you can, it's just complicated
assuming you used a real splitter
you also should have something else right?

I'd get an DP to HDMI adapter for like 99 cents
instead of trying to get a splitter to work
that's Display Port
I'd also kind of assume your monitor has one
if its new
or else an adapter is easy
or that
these little things work too
if you want to try getting the hdmi splitter to work first
you should check out your graphics options
and see if it's detected 2 unique destinations
or if you'd need a 3rd party program to do it
really cheap "splitters" won't let you, because they aren't actually muxing the signal

click display settings
scroll down
make it say extend these displays
try hitting detect
at the top
so both monitors are displaying the same thing, or one is displaying nothing?
