it's usually the speaker, but I guess if you constructed a self-proving sentence, and abstracted the speaker from it

"Guaranteed to happen" just means if it doesn't happen, someone else will owe you money.

then it would mean #1 is correct, I just can't think of a statement that works like that

I watched Project Hail Mary because it is on Prime Video now

Its good enough, but what I would want changed would make it not watchable for the vast majority of audiences.

I really like the Martian (movie not book), I feel like Proj Hail Mary is trying to tell a character story that's sorta impossible to adapt

even if you let the MC talk to himself a lot

All the cool sciencey stuff the biologist pulls off is glossed over in the movie.

I don't like his books at all, I really thought I would when I first read the Martian ik for some people they're some of their favorites

but yes, definitely more introspective and technical in writing

without spoiling anything, since I still think most people here would find it worth watching Proj Hail Mary I don't think you can write a main character who needs to be 10 different characters at once, and gloss over the internal conflict

I find the Martian book to be absolutely boring tediously stepping through stuff like it's telling me, "yes i did my research, here it is". The movie was good to me since it glossed over all that.

being scared, witty, smart, etc. all at the same time is sorta exhausting for the viewer

Actually Leg, I may tempter my recommendation to you slightly I think it is a really great movie, but there may be a couple parts that frustrate you

its not as insane as the feat of genius pulled off by Johnny Storm in the new iteration of the Fantastic Four though

learning an entire language from one translated sentence is absurd

I think the fact there is never a real language issue is the part that I feel they missed on

if you want to handwave the initial learning to some passable level, sure, I'll suspend my disbelief

numbers directly to nuanced sentences

but after that, it makes no sense to drop it as a plot point, and treat it as some Pacific Islander "Ohana means family" type exchange every time

though, I can sorta look past it because I'd hate for an entire movie to sound ESL

My issue really is the all-in-one MC, I think it's a hard to suspend my disbelief that he can simultaneously have every character perk and character flaw at once, all the time

some of the later scenes implies that Rocky has memorized the list of words that are in the lexicon and is actively thinking about that in conversation

The Martian worked better ironically, by giving him less flaws

clearly Leg, the best way to experience the movie is to see it in some random Indonesian dub

its funny how they obtained an extremely power energy source and learned how to duplicate it infinitely before letting the planet turn into an ice ball

one of my favorite parts of the movie, was the classroom scenes when all the kids are talking about the stuff going on

and coming to the realization "oh we're fucked"

Humanity obtained something far easier to synthesize than plutonium that is very destructive and controllable. Everyone dies before the sun burns out.

Arrival was an awesome movie. That and Contact are my two favorite alien movies. Well, unless you count District 9, but that's more like an action movie with aliens in it
