Generation Z college students are reportedly arriving on campus struggling with basic reading comprehension, even difficulty processing full sentences, per FORTUNE.
AI use is pretty fucking bad
across all fields too lmao
the number of people I see with chatgpt open on their laptops in my undergrad courses feels like it's doubled every year for the past 3 years
It is so fucking obvious when grading to
Middle level students do not want to think
they were forced to do some level of it under the old system
top students this is not an issue for, even if they use AI, they can tell when it is giving them something insane
without AI these people would still have no idea what they are doing
bottom level student would have failed out regardless
actually the other person I know at this school who knows what they are doing the most practically lives with AI
I'll ask them about something we talked about yesterday and they'll have so many conversations they have to scroll through pages trying to find it
Google ai overview has given me hints in the right path for how to do a problem when I look up shit for coursework
but the answer it gives has almost always been wrong, or at least partially insane
You are probably not doing university assignments though, so its easier to not fall into the trap of "well the ai said this and I don't know what I am doing anyways so it sounds right"
Middling students are tricked by AI's solutions it presents, because it lays it out like it is a formal explanation you might find in course notes
before the trend was saying "learning all this stuff is pointless, I can just have AI write everything", you already had these people saying "learning all this stuff is pointless, I'm just going to write basic high level python once I graduate"
AI is super useful, but for a lot of things, it also just reveals
"this was busywork to begin with"
for actual coursework, you're just cheating yourself out of learning to a point, but that's if the course isn't bloated at all
yeah the go-to cope for students is "this is just busywork, I shouldn't have to do this anyway."
which is true a lot of times to be fair
For the courses I TA its not lol
yeah that is the problem. you'll have kids saying things like basic programming assignments are busy-work, because they can already find the solutions online
which is true but, if you know what you are doing like you claim then that level of work shouldn't even take effort
Also the point of the assignment in a coding class is to learn how to think about problems (abstract) not a particular already well solved problem
same with math
Kribbles I 100% cheat by looking shit up
But I also would never use a solution I don't fundementally understand and can replicate
so its usually a "I skip 1 hour of thinking about how to do this subpart of the problem"
Dr. Kribbles, I want you to see this assignment I have for a 500-level grad course at a real (joke) university
anyway rather than not knowing how to do anything without AI the bigger problem I see is people not being able to do anything on their own computer without a toy assignment setup
is the windows 11 version extra credit
