The bald eagle was chosen as the national symbol of the United States in 1782 when it was adopted as the centerpiece of the Great Seal of the United States. It was selected for its majestic appearance, strength, long life, and status as a bird native exclusively to North America, symbolizing the nation's unique identity and independence. Historical symbolism played a key role—Founding Fathers drew inspiration from the Roman Republic, where the eagle represented power and authority. The bald eagle on the Great Seal holds an olive branch (for peace) and arrows (for war), facing the olive branch to signify a preference for peace. Although it had long been considered the national bird in practice, the bald eagle was not officially designated by law until December 2024, when President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation confirming it as the official national bird of the U.S., correcting a historical oversight
