Replying to Spooky Phijkchu #spooky.131 I actually think this would be my answer
I cannot think of a more optimal way to possibly limit your search pool
because to reach terminal velocity, you'd have to drop from a ~250 floor building
so as a % of the overall solution space, 100 isn't that bad
but if it's not 100, you then have to start from floor 1, with egg 2
alternatively, Fire's solution is assume it breaks from floor 1, have that be your 1 drop and that solves in 1 as well
I think the possibility of solving it in 1 is less valuable, since you will still known the answer with the amount of eggs you have
so always dropping at 50 is more valuable
both are guaranteed to eventually solve it, and have the possibility of solving in 1

These kind of questions are useful because even if you would not get the absolutely mathematical correct answer, you can quickly figure out if the guy you are interviewing is retarded or not

Okay leg, I posited the idea to my physics club server. They suggested the following
have a larger distance of floors checked lower
then narrow it higher up
They you can more evenly check if it is lower, but you don't have to work all the way up the building as slowly with your initial checks

Working it out ourselves there, we got to 16
so not quite optimal, but close
We got to the optimal answer
but only because we knew the optimal was 14
technically could have gotten it
the trick is you need each step to be exactly 1 step less than the previous (since you want the amount of steps to check to be the same no matter where it fails. So you check n. n-1. n-2, ... floors each step
n=14 is optimal
This was done not knowing what the hell triangle numbers are
so I like the solution more
but the logic behind getting to it is the important part
Its how the math works out for a building between 99 and 102 floors
it would be a different number if it was a different number of floors
You cannot solve this with vectors
so it is not real math
