there are a million stories about this, but as more info is coming out it just keeps getting funnier
the Spooky synopsis is, a company called Intelsat owns dozens of these Boeing made sattelites which they use for VSAT service,
They were noticing some weird telemetric Friday night, and decided to call Boeing support and have them do a remote diagnostic over the weekend
Sunday night, the weekend boeing crew blew the satellite up somehow
Space Force says 20 pieces, ESA says ~50, RCA says ~80
how that happened nobody knows
not even Intelsat
this is sitting up in GEO right next to literally every other satellite, so the entire world is shitting their pants
because I don't think this has ever happened before
there are a few rare satellites that die and can't make the ascent to the graveyard, and just sit inactive in GEO
but they really haven't had any blow up before
the theory we're working with rn, is that they engaged VOE controls, and literally had the sat rip itself apart, hydrazine rupture cause the explosion after the fact
we literally can't figure out how else you could cause a kinetic explosion like this
this is not a weapons sat, this is not a US/RU/CN government sat, and it's a standard Boeing bus that has been used since the 2010s
we literally think the weekend crew just had no idea what they were doing

space fires can happen, but this is new enough that shouldn't have been an issue
and if it was a meteor strike sort of thing, the world would know because people track the GEO belt intensely for debris/collision avoidance
there are slim odds someone will release footage, just because of where it was and how packed in it was
I was reading about this over the weekend, and the stories really do keep getting funnier
as soon as there is cascading dmg from something else getting wiped out
I think we'll reach peak cancelation for Boeing
for a stat, there are 534 (now 533) in that pod, out of ~1100 total in GEO
