I used to take mandarin back in middle school
i wish any school around here offered language classes for anything that wasn't French, spanish, or navajo
mint general
see that would be me, and my family. but Im too poor atm to travel . but they do live all over the world. I just do europe because that's usually the cheapest option
mint general
classic memory is asking my advisors if I could take Spanish 3 because I liked learning languages and he said no you clearly suck at spanish
mint general
my middle school having mandarin is super wacky. because we only had spa ish french and mandarin, then they got rid of French after two years. but the whole school is like 70 people. yet we had a mandarin teacher

Bc me and my girlfriend are taking a much shorter, much more condensed Canada trip in August lol
Quebec is so close to Kingston you should try to talk your gf into how you have to meet your internet cult leader irl

the teacher was our literature teacher, and she knew zero spanish. as a class we voted to designate every other day as a nap day

Duolingo is nice for practicing hiragana and katakana with that other tab thing. no idea about spanish, I think it was ok. it's not that great for German I will say, I mostly use the DW learn app from German government media company DW

I'm just glad English became the worlds default 2nd language, you can reliably find someone able to understand you nearly anywhere
yeah but this sucks because this a big reason why our language learning curriculum is so awful in the states. that and education as a whole is awful here
Spooky Phijkchu general
it's inconsistant across the country, and I think it is underrated how important that is, but most curriculums biggest shortcomings is the innability to weed people out

it's a catch 22, states that have enough resources to care and segregate, end up trying for the bottom 20% anyway, so they get the tax dollars states that are too poor to care, didn't have the resources to segregate, so they get the tax dollars because the standards are so low
