Double checked, no one spoke about it. But the quote was in Pika's notes for episode 19.

oh that's just saying that the coup in the Alliance was acting like Rudolf, sorry I interpreted what you were saying as Rudolf's ghost making a legitimate appearance and I was confused.

I have just finished reading "From the New World" (Shinsekai Yori)
An incredibly strange book, gosh. I don't remember who recommended it to me, but I've had the PDF sitting in my downloads for a while. It has an anime too which is more likely anyone would know it from I suppose.
The anime is great but extremely weird for sure
oh I just realized this chat doesn't say books anymore, RIP
I think this is just misc chat
Anyway, I really appreciate standalone books. So many books nowadays are massive series, especially ones that aren't finished yet, and it's nice to have a book that just has an ending with nothing else to it.
Once upon a time, this was fire emblem heroes chat
then general gacha chat
it kind of evolves to suit the needs

I was very surprised to learn a man wrote this book. It is very female-author coded
Female lead, includes gay (male) sex, describes female genitalia more than male genitalia, includes the protagonist complaining about woman things.
I've been reading principles of underwater sound, very exciting I know
I would have 100% pinned shinsekai yori as a female author too.
wait does the anime still have the gay sex scene?
insane
Replying to Kribbles #kribbles1 I've been reading principles of underwater sound, very exciting I know
the SOFAR channel is neat
Wait, was it full on gay sex? In the anime, it's just a bunch of teenagers suddenly getting really horny on a hill and they all go for the same sex all at once. They all just cuddle and kiss
no there's full on gay sex with penetration
Oh, wild lmao
there's also full on lesbian sex and a hetero sex scene
Also these characters are ALL children at this point
That's about it in the anime -- spoilers maybe idk removed it

the lost art of being to tell a complete story in a couple-hundred pages
YES EXACTLY
though, I will admit I'm intellectually guilty of the opposite too
where when I read something I really like, I do sorta hope the author just milks it
even if I know that I will dislike it in aggregate
if an author has put in the effort to make a universe to put the story in, put another story in it
Spooky would not pass the marshmallow test
Replying to legorhin #jazardly if an author has put in the effort to make a universe to put the story in, put another story in it
At least for me, It's rarely the larger lore/universe that puts a self-contained story over-the-top
I agree that works for some things, but most of my favorite books are either heavily character driven or are written around exploring some concept/philosophy, that you can't just tack-onto as easily

2 differences between the books and the OVA for LOTGH: in the books alliance troops use mirror shields to deflect lasers. Which is why Schonkopf always calls his ax a "Tomahawk" since that's a one-handed axe.
The other difference for Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that since the liquid metal shell is OVA original, what you get instead of speeder-bike jousting on the liquid metal, when Walter von Schonkopf goes out for exercise in the Fortress vs Fortress episode, you get WW1-style Death Star trench warfare.
Also Muller places a bomb on the outer walls.

oh yeah I do remember the lack of speeder-bike jousting in the books. It's still pretty minor of a change though. What's your opinion on if the books are worth continuing to read though?
At least this one (book 4) has my favourite line of foreshadowing in the final chapter.
Though you can get that from watching DNT.
Book 5 is kind of worth it for Bewcock's aide's backstory.
I don't remember much else about future books except being disappointed in how they translated certain lines, including Dusty's catchphrase. Though they then fired that guy and lifted the quote from the Central-Anime subs.
I remember reading online that some of the later books have worse translations
Alright well I may continue on reading then if I have the time
Thanks for the input
You can complain about the bad translations or you can use it for headcanon fodder.
Book 4 seems to imply that Erwin Josef is predisposed to marry Charlotte Phillis, admiral Alex Caselne's daughter. Since there are a lot of paragraphs that talk about Erwin Josef where Caselne's name shows up.

Er spoiler? You should mark that…
thought you read chapter 5. Sorry.
Although double checking there were only two instances of them sharing a paragraph. And one of them was just Caserne saying "White knight syndrome is engulfing the capital".
oh I'm pretty behind on the books, still on the last section before this current bookclub.
I didn't realize that was a thing that had happened in our current section of the bookclub, so it was fine to not spoiler it.
for some reason, I thought that was something that was going to happen later
I had been under the impression that if you didn't bring something up it was because you didn't find it interesting enough to mention it.
Like, I thought it strange you didn't mention the lard kaiser, who was the worst kaiser since Rudolf. But figured that maybe it wasn't as interesting as Rudolf naming a unit of measurement after himself.
I don't want to be the guy who constantly points stuff out from the books. Which is why I reference the manga and DNT. And the musical.

If that's something from a while back, I don't remember it at all
