On the subject of Rudolf's ghost in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, from book 3 onwards they start making a separate list for dead major characters, and Rufolf is never listed amongst the dead ones. They start listing dead characters after they mention Rudolf.

I have just finished reading "From the New World" (Shinsekai Yori)
An incredibly strange book, gosh. I don't remember who recommended it to me, but I've had the PDF sitting in my downloads for a while. It has an anime too which is more likely anyone would know it from I suppose.
The anime is great but extremely weird for sure

Anyway, I really appreciate standalone books. So many books nowadays are massive series, especially ones that aren't finished yet, and it's nice to have a book that just has an ending with nothing else to it.

At least for me, It's rarely the larger lore/universe that puts a self-contained story over-the-top
I agree that works for some things, but most of my favorite books are either heavily character driven or are written around exploring some concept/philosophy, that you can't just tack-onto as easily

2 differences between the books and the OVA for LOTGH: in the books alliance troops use mirror shields to deflect lasers. Which is why Schonkopf always calls his ax a "Tomahawk" since that's a one-handed axe.
The other difference for Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that since the liquid metal shell is OVA original, what you get instead of speeder-bike jousting on the liquid metal, when Walter von Schonkopf goes out for exercise in the Fortress vs Fortress episode, you get WW1-style Death Star trench warfare.
Also Muller places a bomb on the outer walls.

oh yeah I do remember the lack of speeder-bike jousting in the books. It's still pretty minor of a change though. What's your opinion on if the books are worth continuing to read though?
At least this one (book 4) has my favourite line of foreshadowing in the final chapter.
Though you can get that from watching DNT.
Book 5 is kind of worth it for Bewcock's aide's backstory.
I don't remember much else about future books except being disappointed in how they translated certain lines, including Dusty's catchphrase. Though they then fired that guy and lifted the quote from the Central-Anime subs.
I remember reading online that some of the later books have worse translations

Book 4 seems to imply that Erwin Josef is predisposed to marry Charlotte Phillis, admiral Alex Caselne's daughter. Since there are a lot of paragraphs that talk about Erwin Josef where Caselne's name shows up.

Although double checking there were only two instances of them sharing a paragraph. And one of them was just Caserne saying "White knight syndrome is engulfing the capital".

I'm in a similar place in our meetings though where I don't really want to just constantly bring up "and then this happens in the books, which is different"
It's something from the chapter I mentioned (though lard kaiser is a moniker I made up). Schumacher starts to wonder how bad a kaiser Erwin Joseph will become, then the narrator goes onto a tangent about a kaiser whom plunged the galaxy into civil war, (edit:which he lost) before being replaced by another Goldenbaum.
I also try and avoid mentioning book details since it's the equivalent of me saying "THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN IN THE SHOW". Which is a spoiler in its own way.
I've actually been constantly one-meeting behind on the books so I haven't been able to talk too much about anything, even if there were things I could've brought up.
I remember one thing I noted was the descriptions of the axes. Like, they're diamond encrusted melee weapons, which I suppose might make sense, but it feels a bit silly.

I read the entirety of the Sunlit Man in one day.. sorry, I do like me some Sanderson
It was fun! I got into the story. Sanderson does seem to have an annoying flaw in writing where, whichever character the MC meets first, is always the most trustworthy person or someone important. Like, you just happen to stumble upon the leader or whatever when you start exploring, c'mon now
I found Sunlit Man to be a bit boring personally. Didn't hate it, but wasn't nearly as captivating as his earlier works.
I don't actually remember most of my complaints with it, I read it a while ago, but I remember being a bit disappointed.

I never actually realized this though, that's funny.
I didn't know the book existed til today when I saw it at the library lol. I'd probably agree that the story was lacking, but I love the worldbuilding in Sanderson books.
Anyway, the other book I got was Heart of Darkness and I've been told, "oh god that book is horribly boring" so we'll see how it goes

I really like Heart of Darkness...
It's classic literature, so can be difficult to read for sure, but if you go in with that mindset, it's an incredible story.
