I was pretty disappointed about getting Ana from the GSSR this summer, but now I'm pretty happy about it
farming the assassin node was a lot easier thanks to her
The overall quality of the series' writing was on par, if not slightly lower, then Fate/Apocrypha. It set out to tell a epic about humanity's right to life and what it means to live, but spent so much of it's time shrouded in confusion or boredom. None of the subplots were particularly motivating, none of the enemy masters or servants served much of a purpose then spouting off ideals blindly, and the supporting cast was 'meh'. Most notable would be Rin, as this is probably the weakest Rin Tohsaka the franchise has ever seen in terms of character intrigue.
Compound all of those issues with a terrible main character. So Cardboard that I could fold him up, make a box out of him, and invade Shadow Moses in a no-killing run. At least Deen/Stay Night's Emiya was memorable in his chavunism and stupidity, and Aprocrypha's Seig was remarkable in the relationships he fostered with Astofolo and Jean'd'Arc. I couldn't tell you one thing about this character. And that's a massive tragedy. Because the main plot hinges on the main character. His identity as a Dead Face rage beast was never shown beyond an alternate face, and his arrival as a human was human in only the vaguest of styles.
Those elements, coupled with a generally forgettable soundtrack (Not necessarily due to lack of quality, but it's usage was severely underwhelming) makes this series a strong qualifier for the worst installment of the various Animes of the Fate Franchise. But...
...I enjoyed this series immensely. I'm a sucker for Shaft's visual style and direction, and this series took many of the best elements of Madoka's and Monogatari's visuals in wonderful locations that fit the mood that was attempting to be conveyed. Strength in color alone was remarkable, rivaling that of Zero and UBW. The character and landscape designs ranged from average to fucking stunning. Aside from Hakuno every character was visually interesting in some way or another, rather it be a remix of a familiar face or a new design altogether. And on the animation front, while the series was never really that intense with its' animation, it rarely made any real errors.
And the top of it all, the cream of the crop, the best element of the series. Saber Extra. I'm not joking in the slightest when I say that THIS Saber is possibly the greatest thing to happen to the Fate franchise, maybe aside from Zero's Gilgamesh. Her very presence just lights up the screen. Every moment where she has a part, she steals the show. Nero Claudius offers up a wonderful take on a historic figure, one that has a little more basis in reality then most other Fate servants, but never is that used to hold her back. Nay, Nero here blossomed into her own character, and was single-handedly the main reason I stuck with this work. Top Tier Waifu material.
The visuals, combined with Above-And-Beyond-Best-Girl, raise a work that should be mired as a 4/10 into at least a 6/10. And personally, it drags it up to 8/10. Nero's presence is just THAT wonderful for me. Would I recommend this work to others? Only if they like Shaft's visual flair or are already a Fate Superfan. Otherwise, no. But danm, I won't forget this show just because of those two reasons alone.
Umu!
A good analysis, but I don't think the infamous tyrant Nero Claudius was properly portrayed. She was very cute, her design is fantastic, memorable lines and her signature "umu" is just amazing. Problem is, I wouldn't even think this splendid creature is Nero Claudius by any stretch of the imagination. Add a more historical edge to her and she'd be perfect.
