VTubers were becoming more and more popular overseas and English speakers were desperate for good English VTubers, of which there were little to none at the time.
Gura was already popular as Senzawa, though not as a streamer, so people already knew her, and she could be pretty funny at times.
And obviously, once you're somewhat popular, you just become more popular. If you look up VTuber, you'll see Gura, and be more likely to stay with her rather than finding a different one.
I am not much a vtuber hater (some here may claim I am even the opposite) but her in particular just never had any reason to be popular personality wise
