its when you suddenly "need" to study

I didn't need to start studying until university

I didn't need to study until 11th and 12th, but I dind't really study in those

and that was only because I basically had entirely AP (college) classes

like when you are taught in a class, in k-8 everything the teacher tells you is ALL the information that will be on the test, literally all the surface level stuff they say and teach

is what you'll learn

9th grade was the first time I ever struggled with a class but I blame that one more on the teacher since everyone else struggled and she was fired the next year 10th grade I coasted 11th I had all my core classes as AP classes + AP compsci and 12th i had 3? + an extra

and honestly, for me at least, the only classes it effected were science and math

I feel like there's a transition between absorbing info and demonstrating/applying it

and in a bad school system, you don't have to do much of the latter until late HS or college

APUSH was probably my favorite class ever in all of highschool and I didn't study for it all, that class the entire year was the teacher doing 1 presentation then us doing a 10 question quiz after then literal free time for the rest of the class

it was "college level" but there was no issue absoring the information

because it was presented like any other class one would encoutner before

but when I hit stuff like Calc and physics where it's the application of methods, and you need to study and review problems on how to combat problems or apply methods, and you're given loads of homework I didn't really have the drive, or really abilitiy to study, because I've also never really done homework

(but still had straight As basically due to test scores weighing everything)

I don't think the system is entirely at fault, but it's a common enough trend where there's been multiple studies and reports over this topic to the point where I think it's pretty applicable that it's at least part of it

Like, obviously for someone "smart" or gifted at absoring information it works

but some later stuff in life requires you to actually apply, I can't find the source rn but if someoner eally wants it I'll find it later but this is why gifted children often struggle at learning languages

or ever needed

The main problem with schools as far as I have noticed is they are designed for middle of the road people. So if you are too gifted you do not need to study and you never learn those skills, so university is harder

Maybe of my class of like 60, there were like 4-6 who I think will do some really interesting physics/math stuff

I typically was in the top 20% of the bell curve for most classes

and those were the people way above me

For the record, I was never called gifted

or in special classes

if that's "book smart" that's a fine label

but I really don't think it's meaningful

because for me anyways, elementary school there were a few, then I was in a special program in middle school full of only "gifted", then in highschool I went to a speciality program for technology where everyone was suppoused to be the cream of the crop at the school. and out of those people always there was always like the general mass of people, and maybe one or two people who felt kinda average but then there was always 2-3 absolute standout people that people joked about being the smartest, all always got 100s or perfect grades etc.

When I was in elementary school I would always be done the math the teacher was explaining before she explained it so people wanted to be in my group for the group math activities
