lighting matters in <10% of games
the majority of games would benefit from not trying to get fancy with moving light sources, and light the scene like you would in a movie, with a fixed source
if your game has to have a day/night cycle
then fine
but you're still better off lighting the scene statically
and faking the shadows
and this is coming from someone who already spends an obscene amount on computers, and doesn't need to care about the performance impact of anything
