Having gotten to the point in my physics education where everything boils down to "we don't know why this works", I think we need to fix physics before we do that leg

there is a more rigerous and correct way of doing quantum that is less wrong but has impossible to solve problems

specifically quantizing does not work the way we do it and there is no unique correct way to do it
except on a torus and the positive real number line
then you can quantize
so we just have quantization schemes that 'work' most of the time except when they do not
