I can't in good faith ever recommend someone use FreeNAS, despite it being what I use
it's such a royal pain in the ass
i had a cloud storage thing from wd at one point and it turned me off from all their shit
Are the two NAS solutions, less features than FreeNAS or OpenBSD
but less of a headache to run/configure

if you're just using an old fx8350 system, any of the three will work fine

Maybe it's because I only buy mechanical drives in bulk
and it's not even like I remember them being that much cheaper
it's still in the $20-$30 range per TB even now
