". One often sees “women’s peace petitions” by organizations with names like “mothers for peace.” I’m all for peace, of course. But if I were a woman, I’m not sure what I’d think of this. Note that such petitions do two things: they conflate “woman” with “mother”, and they implicitly attribute special qualities (of empathy, of care, of moral common sense) to mothers. It is politically ineffective to make public pleas if they carry the whiff of sanctimonious claims of special virtue and moral insight. And it is not politically savvy to risk alienating women who, by choice or circumstance, do not become mothers. But such appeals also play into the very stereotypes that male supremacists have often used to assign women a flatly inferior status to men—emotionally and spiritually attuned, of course, but for that very reason too soft for the cut and thrust of political life. So even if I opposed a particular war, I don’t think I could sign such a petition. "
