I found an appearance changing station on the starting island that you should be able to access before even going to the first story island, if either of you are interested i can tell you where it is

you can have visible equipment different from what you have equipped

there's no vanity clothes until the towel costume in the first island but its a thing

and its how you equip stuff like the bow and glasses
