so 5.5GB/s is really something closer to 1.8-2.0GB/s
that's more realistic
and those are peak speeds too
It's silly to get hung up on this... but 5.5 just isn't something that we can do yet, on a single drive
especially with last-gen interface technology
Look Sony
if you had a way, to make an honest to God 5.5GB/s NANDflash chip
you wouldn't be making consoles
you'd take over the fucking world
those are already out
my cpu is 7 nanometer
it's here
5nm is 2022, still won't be that fast
3.5GB/s isn't achievable without RAID either
NAND isn't fast enough
If this peaks above 2.0GB/s
I'll honestly give Sony a win
I actually really appreciate this presentation
despite shitting on the SSD segment
Mostly because I like this kind of stuff, and it's not all snake oil
It's the same problem Microsoft will have tbh
this console will need to be priced at $600 minimum
I'm glad they're considerably more powerful
but 4k and 8k will just waste that potential
The cool shit developers could do at 1080p
will be erased
while they chase CUTTING EDGE 8K GRAPHICS
and we'll be stuck with games that still run in the 40-60FPS range
Since they're not going with Nvidea architecture
raytracing will be even weirder
I know AMD came up with a way to do it, efficiently
but it's not quite there yet, to replace rasterization
Which is why top end cards.... have ray tracing as an afterthought
I think PS5 will be less powerful, but I actually expect it to run better than xBox
idk though
I get the feeling that PS5, will be far more impressive
but will have objectively lower specs, just based on how you report the numbers
Which is why they're trying to push these untrue numbers like 5.5
since that's what it will """feel""" like
God
no one understands how SSDs work
I just....
I'm glad some people are calling bullshit on the rated speeds
But.... the more basic question is what's the point of a fast interface you can't saturate
your old mechanical hard drives, were conected using 6GB/s SATA CABLES
But you'd be laughed out of the room claiming you got anything more than a couple hundred MB/s
even if we believe that sony's drives are capable of 5.5 GB/s
they're... just not going to achieve that... at any point
yep, lol
Microsoft's tech for game cartridges is honestly more interesting
since it feels like they're trying to bring back eSATA
in a new form factor
FIREWIRE 3.0
it lives
since disks are not going to hold most AAA games
and USB drives would be too slow, without having some dedicated cache onboard the console
it's a neat idea
PS5 hasn't shown off it's form factor yet
though I expect it to be interesting

lol
but true hopefully it is
