Your specials are very helpful for getting back on stage
up b is usually a recovery move
With ness in particular, you can aim psi thunder into your own body to launch yourself in the direction you hit

Getting back on stage is a lot easier for some characters
I remember ness being able to kind of stun lock with psi fire, but I imagine experienced players can escape it
