Honestly, in normal minecraft, swords and axes are pretty balanced. Axes lower swing makes it easier to counter them via shields. Swords can technically do more DPS too.
In McMMO they're vastly different. Swords do bleed and can counter back damage, giving a much more skillful playstyle focused on evasion and good plays. While axes are focused on raw damage, including skills like "more damage to armored foes" "better crits" "more damage every 50 levels up to level 200" "chance for greater impact" and an aoe special attack. While axe may be more superior, you have to realize that it still carries the vanilla minecraft restrictions of shields. Also that it relies on luck a lot more.
