One of the many reasons the Wii U failed
the main one being lack of 3rd party support
and the other the fact that noone knew what it was
They marketed the gamepad, not the system. People thought it was just a tablet for the Wii

I would guess that the dock has a separate graphics card to the tablet, so higher graphics can be sent to a tv
