alternatively they could precompile the mods and distribute them so they don't need to be compiled for each load, but then the source code wouldn't need to be public

@Bopit there are 3 types of programs (afaik) compiled, interpreted, and hybrids. Compiled programs are turned into machine code before the coder releases them and they can be run. Interpreted ones send the source code and the computer has to turn it into machine code every time it runs. Hybrids convert only some of the code into machine code. An example of an interpreted language is Python, its open source because the program itself with its source code is sent. This is how I learned it, sorry if I am completely wrong. Compiled programs are more popular with businesses as well because they are much harder to copy
