You can play Classic and Shadowlands side by side, and the only things they've really implemented into the game engine on live/retail/modern/whatever you want to call it that used to require addons are showing you quest givers, objectives, and turn-ins on the map, and dungeon maps & loot interfaces.

WoW could run perfectly fine on Xbox - they've already added in built-in gamepad support - but you'd probably only be able to play it at casual levels because it relies so heavily on player-made addons for so fucking much in the game.
