And if they ever remake fates, you can bet they will not care about the fact that the original manuscript was like
They won't do this but

I don't like characters being relegated to being "stat backpacks" Fates/Awakening in general feel too snowbally where you're gonna get your good units (royals in fates) and ignore everyone else.

I think it's pretty smart way to give you 20 units without making it so that maps become you having giant chunks of units swarming in a deathball It also gives a use to units that can't reach something this turn, but it makes you think about their positioning
taxes music
I mean that's fair but you lose SO MUCH damage by using a character as a stat backpack. You only really do it on characters that are incredibly strong already and just need a bit of extra speed/str/def or another point of mov You can also just not engage with that part of the mechanic. It's better that unless your unit is going to be taking a lot of hits in a turn, to ALWAYS seperate
taxes music
There's alot of strategy because the fact that enemies can use pairups against you, for you to pair up when you're going to get hit by a lot of enemies to cut the damage down massively

I dunno, the Royals are so much better than everyone else that it feels like I may as well just stat backpack them and not engage with the mechanic of splitting up.

Well for birthright you don't want anyone but Ryoma paired up. Unles you use Hinoka with a super big def unit and guard nagi, but she's better as a buff bot lol For conquest Camilla benefits from a strong backpack yea, but you need to think about who you're pairing her with, and make sure that unit is getting used, and for a lot of the early game you don't have the unit slots to dedicate someone to backpack only, so its better to use her to fly a unit then seperate then attack seperate. Leo does not want a backpack like takumi, and Xander wants a backpack no question

Even if I do keep the units split, they're still sorta "one unit" in the sense that I always want them to stay next to each other. I don't really think in "these two units can do two different things" it's "these two units are going to stay together and accomplish something together"

Yeah, but you can think about them as lego pieces that are a lot stronger together than seperate, you can still seperate them. If I'm building Wyvern Elise+Odin, for the early game yeah I'm going to backpack elise into odin a lot, and have them be together a lot, but there's scenarios like conquest chapter 10 when I'd say want Odin to go on the left side all by himself

I honestly can't explain it perfectly though because at the end of the day, it's just my personal opinion. I don't have a strong reason why I may like or dislike something personally.

Seperating a unit to give them +1 mov, seperatitng a unit in a posiition so a unit gets a pairup attack leading toa kill
taxes music
and makes you feel smart when you can just barely kill something and have no one else in range- but if you first pair up a unit then fly them over and seperate, the unit gets a pair up attack that NOW lets them get the kill

Also honestly fates has a really small cast so I don’t think this is too much of an issue

Conquest is just the most recent Fates I played, so I know it the best, but yeah every map just felt a bit pointless when I had Xander/Camilla/Corrin. I didn't really use any other units very much.
