I'm in entry level college classes right now and I'm really surprised by how few other students understand anything, even basic shit
the loss of knowledge due to covid and remote school is crazy
everyone is 2+ years behind, and standards have been relaxed like crazy so they're not even trying to catch back up

Its a willpower problem from the students too I think
For sure, students who were going to do good were always going to do good
its the ones who could have been okay to mid that slipped
K-12 was already getting bad with not being willing to fail and hold people to standards
distractions, remote school, and worse instruction material adds up over time
and yeah, I agree with Pika, the top ~25% are fine
it's that middle 50% who slip
so by the time you get to college, ~2/3 people in your classes are not equipped to be there, or even know how to learn in general
so then standards slip
