It focuses much more on smaller stories and side plots than the main actual plot, which is also something dragon quest does a lot, but DQ9 REALLY goes into it

The big thing it lacks though, is good side characters until you meet train man. The game is played by (You) customly created protag, and the only party members you get are ones you make

So DQ9 lacks the wacky characters, except your gyaru fairy girl, which is a staple of DQ, so it is a little weird in that regard

but it also has some of the most interesting mini stories and the overall plot is different than any of the "YoU Are THE HEro" DQ games

It also has some of the most customisable character creation/party creation with your whole team being able to be any class you want, any gender, etc. with tons of hidden classes and tons of interesting weapon types

I like the game a lot, but you can also see a lot of stuff that shows it was for people with friends, with the dungeon explore with friends mode, the general just local co-op with you both being able to move around and hang out, the emote system (really was before its time)

It really made the game feel alive and I bet if you had friends, or lived in japan, it would of been really cool.

It's also harder to avoid foes on the ingame map than in some others, but you can go invisible and stuff I guess
